Democratic Women of Clifton Unite

For the first time, close to 100 Dems form grassroots group for change.

For the first time, in a heavily Republican district, the Democratic Women of Clifton united at a tea last Sunday to begin a grassroots campaign for unity ... community ... and change.

About 100 "Femme Dems" met at the Clifton Town Meeting Hall to voice their concerns and hear guest speakers Kate Hanley, former chairman of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, as well as Cathy Belter, Springfield District School Board representative.

The forum offered women the opportunity to identify each other and share their feelings. "We want this to be a group where the women can connect," said organizer Donna Netschert of Clifton.

SPEAKER Liz Dixon started off the meeting by stating: "We don't have to be the silent minority anymore."

Said Clifton resident Taya Abbott: "I'm a left-wing liberal. This party is excluding these individuals. Talk to people who have opposite views from you and show your ideas."

Said former flight attendant Cynthia Stone: "For the first time in my 49 years, I am really ashamed and concerned about the direction my country is going."

"I'm here because the November election really broke my heart," added Mary Gibson.

The group outlined key points it would like to highlight — including reproductive rights, ending the war in Iraq, environmental issues and separation of church and state, among others. Women also filled out a survey detailing their particular interests and discussed future goals.

"I'm anxious to hear the vision and I'm anxious to be part of community unity," said Clifton resident Lynne Garvey Wark.

"Clifton has always been heavily Republican," added Belter. "This was a surprise to us to see this many Democrats. This is amazing."

Said Former Cub Run Principal Janet LeBel: "I'm very excited about the turnout. I'm thrilled. It's the beginning of something that can be very important."

Added Hanley: "You've got to fertilize the grassroots. It was the grassroots — and I appreciate that — that elected me. I'm a Democrat because I agree with equal rights and civil rights. I believe in investing in the future."
