<sh>Fire Causes $70,000 in Damages
<bt>At approximately 2:20 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 9, the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department units responded to a house fire. The one-story home is located in the McLean area on the 6600 block of Mata Lane. Two adults were home when the fire broke out and escaped unharmed. Damage is estimated at $70,000.
Firefighters saw heavy fire and smoke coming from a vehicle parked in the carport in front of the house. It took approximately 10 minutes to bring the fire under control. Over 40 emergency personnel from Fairfax County were brought to the scene.
The fire started in the homeowner's vehicle parked inside the carport of the home.
<sh>Tysons Corner Burglary
<bt>A burglar in the Tysons Corner area was caught on film by surveillance cameras, and police seek the public's assistance in identifying the man. On Wednesday, July 27 around 1:30 a.m., a man broke into five different office suites located in the 8100 block of Boone Boulevard in the Tysons Corner area and took property, police say. The building's security surveillance system recorded the break-in. The suspect is described as a white male in his 40s, about 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighing 220 pounds, with brown hair and a mustache, say police. He was wearing black pants, a hooded sweatshirt and a knit cap.
<sh>District Residents Invited to Work Session
<bt>The Governing Board of the McLean Community Center (MCC) is inviting residents of Dranesville Small Tax District to a work session on the Center's FY 2007 budget at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 7. The meeting will be at the center, at 1234 Ingleside Ave., McLean. MCC is supported by a special real estate tax paid by district residents. The current tax rate is 2.8 cents for $100 of assessed value. Board committees have been working to develop recommendations to finance center programs and events for FY 2007, which begins July 1, 2006 and ends June 30, 2007. These recommendations will be presented to the full Board and interested citizens at the Sept. 7 meeting, which will be chaired by the Board's Finance Committee. Residents who have suggestions, comments or concerns will have an opportunity to voice them at the work session. Residents who call the center to announce their intention to attend the session will receive a budget package when they arrive.
A public hearing on the FY 2007 budget and the regular monthly meeting of the Governing Board will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 28. Residents who wish to speak at the meeting are asked to call 703-790-0123 to have their names placed on the speakers’ list. Details of the proposed budget will be available for inspection at the Center beginning on Monday, Aug. 29. <sh>Class Registration Opens Aug. 22
<bt>Class registration for the McLean Community Center’s fall session will begin at 5 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 22 for Dranesville Small Tax District 1 residents. Individuals living outside the center’s tax district can begin registering at 5 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 29. Classes will begin the week of Sept. 12. Unless otherwise noted, classes will be held at MCC, which is located at 1234 Ingleside Ave.
New classes for adults include: Virginia Antiques Seminars (sponsored by the McLean-Great Falls Celebrate Virginia 2007 Community Program), Abstract Painting, Holiday Jewelry Workshop, Introduction to Word Processing, Duplicate Bridge, Wine Tasting Seminars, Adult Jazz Dance, Yoga for (Almost) Every Body, Puppy Obedience Training, Guerilla Cleaning, Caring for Your Infant, Asthma Education for Parents and Children, and Self Defense for Teenage Girls.
McLean district residents receive the MCC Fall 2005 Program Guide by mail. The guide gives detailed descriptions of all classes, tours, community events, youth activities and visual and performing arts programs at the center from September through December. <sh>Suicide Prevention Walk
<bt>The Washington, D.C., Out of the Darkness Community Walk, a 5K walk to raise money and awareness for suicide prevention, has been scheduled for Oct. 2. It will be one of nearly 50 similar walks occurring this fall nationwide, which are expected to raise over $1.5 million and bring to light a topic that is often shrouded with stigma. In 2004, 25 community walks brought together over 4,000 walkers and raised more than $830,000.
