Last Wednesday afternoon, county Supervisor Cathy Hudgins (D-Hunter Mill) hosted a community softball game at Baron Cameron Park in Reston, sponsored by two local radio stations owned by Infinity Broadcasting Corp.
Youth from the Reston Teen Center, Fairfax County police officers from the Reston district station and staff from radio stations WPGC 95.5 and WSOL 99.1 played a friendly game of softball, pitting the staff from the radio stations against the police officers and area youth.
“This is a great opportunity for county residents to increase their comfort levels with police officers, learn about county services, which they may be able to utilize, while enjoying popular radio personalities in a community setting,” said Hudgins.
Reston district station Capt. Mike Vencak said the event fosters more effective community policing. “It’s an opportunity to take off our uniforms, mix with the kids and have them see us as people,” said Vencak, “and have a good time.”
Representatives of the Fairfax County Department of Systems Management were on hand to present information on available services.
Infinity Broadcasting Corp. has sponsored events throughout the Washington, D.C. area to encourage local youth, governmental agencies, and service providers to collaborate with one another and to discourage violence.
