Volunteers Keep Seams from Splitting

Volunteers at the Hollin Senior Center take pride in their work. Janice Pickering believes the center is “the best place to be ... I do whatever they need me to do. I’ve worked with the VIP group, on the Renaissance Fair[and] the potluck dinners.”

Mary E. Hayden-Passman contributes by working the front desk on Fridays, helping with crafts, and assisting with the genealogy archives.

Beverly Medlin said, "You get back as much as you give ... My children say, 'you’ve changed your life’s focus from success to significance.'"

As the vice queen of the Hollin Hall Red Hatters, Medlin maintains the books and plans projects for the center. She’s involved with Caps for Kids, a project where volunteers knit hats, mittens and other items and send them to under-privileged children. She also volunteers at Sunrise Assisted Living, a senior resident community.

Dottie Russ is the Queen of Sunshine for the Red Hatters; she is responsible for remembering birthdays, anniversaries and sending members care-packages when they’re sick.

Veronica Cartier, a new member, aids projects with the Red Hatters and takes photography classes at the center.

Julie Ellis, director of the center, credits the contributions as "an inspiration to staff, one another, and to the community. The volunteer appreciation is sponsored by the Advisory Council of Hollin Hall Senior Center and is one of the staff's favorite events. Our volunteers are 120 strong and growing.”

The 120 volunteers who tend to the details of the center’s operations were thanked with a luncheon catered by Boston Market and Hollin Hall Pastry Shop.
