A woman driving a Chevrolet Tahoe collided with a Range Rover and a BMW Monday, April 18, at 2:14 p.m. despite a clear day. The Tahoe, traveling southbound on the George Washington Memorial Parkway, crossed over the double yellow line and collided with the two cars in the northbound lanes. In the Tahoe were an adult passenger and an infant. The driver and infant survived; adult passenger, Siham Arun, died that afternoon at Fairfax Hospital.
Park Police units responded to the scene and the parkway was closed for several hours to deal with injuries and accident reconstruction. Five people were taken to Fairfax Hospital; two were flown by U.S. Park Police helicopter Eagle #1 and a third by a Fairfax County Police helicopter. Two other people were taken by ambulance. All were treated for non-life threatening injuries and released.
U.S. Park Police Sgt. Scott Fear said that this is the second fatality in the past six months. In December, a person was struck by a car after he fell from a stone bridge. Fear, however, stressed that this is one of the safer passages of the parkway and promised to provide statistics for future publication.
The U.S. Park Police Traffic Safety - Accident Reconstruction Unit is investigating the accident, anyone with information about this incident should call the U.S. Park Police, Criminal Investigation Branch, 202-610-8737.
