<cal2>The Naomi Project, a free, confidential, interfaith program sponsored by the Virginia Council of Churches, needs volunteers who will be trained to serve as mentors to at-risk pregnant women and new mothers. Mentors provide positive reinforcement and encouragement, help clients learn about good health during pregnancy, locate needed information and services, model sound parenting skills, and support their clients as they plan for healthy, stable futures.

The next training session for volunteers is four Thursday evenings — April 7, April 14, April 21 and April 28 — at the Fairfax County Government Center from 7:30-9:30 p.m. Spanish-speaking volunteers are especially needed. <cal2>The Eighth Annual Walk for Shea will be held Sunday, April 24, at 9 a.m. in Centreville's Virginia Run community. The daughter of Virginia Run's Larry and Megan Megale, Shea, 9 1/2, has SMA (spinal muscular atrophy), a rare and terminal form of muscular dystrophy which has no cure. And the annual, 5K walk through the community will help raise money for research, in hopes that a cure might be found in time to save Shea's life and those of others like her.

The event begins at the Virginia Run Community Center, at Pleasant Valley Road and Wetherburn Court, off Route 29 in Centreville. It's held, rain or shine, and registration forms are available at the Web site, www.walkforshea.com. Cost is $6 for adults and $4 for children under 18; children under 2 are free; strollers and friendly dogs are welcome.

30th Anniversary Family Fun Festival. 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Northern Virginia Community College's Manassas Campus, 6901 Sudley Road, Manassas. The community is invited to a free Family Fun Festival on April 30 to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Manassas Campus of Northern Virginia Community College.  Musical entertainment, moon bounce, face painting, games, balloons, community displays, picnic lunch, art shows, and more will delight attendees of all ages.  Everything, including lunch, is free and open to the public.  Most of the activities will take place at the Mary Louise Jackson Amphitheater and on the patio behind Howsmon Hall.  In case of inclement weather, the event will be moved to the first floor of Howsmon Hall. Free and open to the public.
