South Riding Crash

Man critically injured.

A South Riding man is listed in critical condition after a traffic accident Friday evening in the area of Route 606 near the ABC Auto Auction near Arcola.

According to the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office, Kyle W. Sargent, 30, of South Riding, was southbound in his 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee when his vehicle collided with a Ford Explorer almost head-on shortly after 6 p.m.

According to witnesses and the findings of the investigation, Melvin J. Hernandez, 23, of Herndon, was northbound on 606 driving a 1997 Ford Explorer when he drove into the right turn lane for ABC Auction in an attempt to pass a 2002 Nissan Sentra driven by Nicholas F. Coursen, 27, of Round Hill.

Hernandez was unable to complete the maneuver in the turn lane and again tried to pass the Nissan on the gravel shoulder after the turn lane ended. Hernandez lost control of the Ford and crossed the northbound lane and into the southbound lane when his truck collided with Sargent's.

Sargent was airlifted to Washington Hospital Center. As of 9:30 p.m. Friday Sargent was listed in critical condition at Washington Hospital Center.

Hernandez was charged with reckless driving at the scene. He declined treatment at the scene.

Both men were wearing their seat belts and both vehicles' airbags deployed in the accident.
