<sh>Flint Hill Names New Headmaster
<bt>The Board of Trustees of Flint Hill School has selected John Thomas as new headmaster of the private school in Oakton. The board voted on his selection Wednesday, Nov. 17, and will begin plans for Thomas to arrive July 1, 2005.
Thomas is currently head of St. Mary's Hall in San Antonio, Texas. St. Mary's Hall is an independent, co-educational day school with 900 students in preschool through 12th grade. Prior to serving at St. Mary's Hall, he was headmaster at Garland Country Day School in Denver, Colo., for two years; middle-school principal at The Kinkaid School of Houston, Texas, for eight years; and dean of students at McDonogh School in Owings Mills, Md., for 16 years.
Thomas received a master of arts in psychology from Towson State University after graduating from Randolph-Macon College. He comes to Oakton with his wife, Emily. Two sons are graduates of Virginia colleges, Washington & Lee and University of Richmond; a third son is a freshman at the University of Virginia.
<sh>Town Hall Closings, No Recycling Pickup
<bt>Vienna Town Hall will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 25, and Friday, Nov. 26, in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. No curbside recycling is available on Thanksgiving Day. Recyclables will be picked up as usual on Nov. 26 for town residents on the Friday collection route.
<sh>Real Estate Taxes Due Dec. 6
<bt>The second installment on 2004 Town of Vienna real estate tax bills is due Monday, Dec. 6. Mailed payments must be postmarked on or before that date to avoid penalties and interest. Late payments will receive a penalty of 10 percent or $5, whichever is greater, along with interest at 10 percent, which accrues until payment is made.
