Reston Community Center's three-part workshop on Diabetes Awareness and Management at the RCC Hunters Woods will take place on three Wednesdays, Nov. 3-17, from 1:30-3:30 p.m. In the workshop, participants will learn about diabetes prevention and management. Mary Ellen Wolf, RN, CDE, a diabetes educator from George Washington University Medical Center, will explain the causes, symptoms and treatment of this disease, how to deal with Medicare, the importance of testing blood sugar levels, how to cope in emergencies and how lifestyle changes can reduce or eliminate vulnerability to diabetes. The third session is a cooking demonstration that will provide tips on how to eat healthily through the holiday season. Reston watercolorist Lassie Corbett will exhibit her new show, "All That Glitters May Be Gold," at the RCC Hunters Woods through Nov. 30, with a reception Sunday, Nov. 7, from 2-4 p.m. The show features her abstract watercolors and is the culmination of many years of experimenting with mixed media, using watercolor, acrylic, collage, pencil and pastel in various combinations. Rice papers as well as other unusual papers collected from all over the world are used, as well as hand-painted paper and found papers. Shells, sand, bark and other small, flat natural objects are incorporated into the paintings.

Reston Community Center's Senior Academy now offers Senior Art Lab, a solution for seniors who want to pursue their artistic dreams but lack workspace. The Senior Art Lab meets every Friday from Nov. 5-Dec. 17, from 10 a.m.-12 noon in the art room of the community center, Hunters Woods. The lab is an open, unstructured session and there is no instructor. Tables and chairs will be set up, but participants must bring their own supplies. Paintings by Reston artist Sue Hamilton will be featured by the Vienna Art Society at the Village Green Gallery through Dec. 11.
