The members of the American Legion Post 184 will hold a Memorial Day observance May 31, beginning at 10 a.m., at the Chestnut Grove Cemetery, located at the intersection of Dranesville Road and Herndon Parkway.
The program will include a tree dedication for U.S. Coast Guard Damage Controlman 3rd Class Nathan B. Bruckenthal, a 1997 Herndon High graduate who was killed April 24 during an attack in Iraq. Guest speaker for the observance is Sgt. Major Wilford Green, Herndon High School Naval ROTC guidance counselor. The service will also include the laying of memorial wreaths.
The Avenue of Flags will be displayed from morning to dusk at the cemetery. There will be 29 veteran casket flags displayed from the main gate to the side gate, each flag has a marker identifying a veteran.
