This year's annual Pleasant Grove Church fair was welcomed by hundreds of residents who turned out to enjoy the old-time festivities. The Friends of Pleasant Grove use the fair to introduce the church and its facilities to the community each year.
Strolling bluegrass musicians and the aroma of the barbecue behind the church drew several people to sit and stay longer than they had intended. “I thought we’d just be here for a little bit, but we’ve been having so much fun,” said Stacey Young. “We went down below [to the black history museum], and was great to know they have something like that and are protecting it,” said Young. The basement of the church houses artifacts from the descendants and builders of the more than 100-year-old church on Lewinsville Road.
“It’s been a great turnout this year,” said Gerry Jewitt.
Joan Jewitt gave tours of the downstairs museum to interested fair goers. “All this stuff came from the yellow house down the road. They never threw away anything, which makes it a great opportunity for us to have on display here,” said Joan Jewitt.
The plant sale drew in some people who were unaware of the fair. “We saw the plants and stopped. My wife pretty much makes me stop at every nursery,” said Tom Jameson.
Through the plant, bake, and attic treasures sale, as well as a raffle for a quilt, the Friends of Pleasant Grove raised several hundred dollars to help maintain the building.
