Police have identified the man who was shot and killed by an Alexandria police officer last week as 50-year-old James L. Hudson of Alexandria.
Hudson was involved in a domestic violence incident in the 4600-block of Raleigh Avenue May 8. When a police officer arrived on the scene and attempted to speak with Hudson, the man became agitated and uncooperative, according to police. When the officer attempted to arrest him, he resisted and a struggle ensued. The officer attempted to use pepper spray to subdue Hudson, however, Hudson was able to take the pepper spray from the officer and he sprayed the officer instead.
At that point the officer fired several shots, killing Hudson. Hudson was dead at the scene. The officer, an eight-year veteran, was taken to Inova Alexandria Hospital where he was treated for the effects of the pepper spray. He had no additional injuries.
The officer has been placed on administrative leave, which is routine in cases of deadly force. The department is conducting an internal investigation into the shooting.
