The Teen Species — Up Close and Personal is a half-day workshop set for Saturday, March 27, at Westfield High School. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., with hour-long workshops continuing until 1 p.m. The program is free; however, donations will be accepted at the door.
A light breakfast will be provided courtesy of Westfield's business partner, Northrop-Grumman Information Technology/TASC.
The keynote speaker is Fran Herron, a mental-health counselor specializing in family counseling and parenting skills. She will discuss limit-setting with adolescents, while maintaining mutual respect and dignity, and strategies for helping teens become more self-disciplined and responsible.
Other topics and speakers will include: Internet Safety, by Iris Beckwith of ChildHelp USA; Eating Disorders, by Beryl Dandridge, licensed certified social worker; Risky Sexual Behavior, by Mary Ann Sheridan, licensed marriage and family therapist; Teens and Finances, by Dave Thompson, certified financial planner; Family Involvement Strategies for Busy Parents, by Fran Herron; and Issues with Nutritional Supplements and Common Medications.
This workshop is the result of a partnership between the Westfield Community Coalition, Stone Middle School PTA and the Westfield High PTA and is for adults only. The goal is to increase parental awareness of teen issues and to help prevent problems.
