New Park at Glen and Travilah?

How should a 25-acre park at the corner of Glen and Travilah roads be developed?

Park and Planning will hold a community meeting on March 24 to discuss the idea. A meeting had been held on Dec. 11, 2003, but due to an error in mailing out notification letters, the county rescheduled the meeting.

The 25-acre parcel that is set to be turned into Greenbriar local park was purchased by the county for approximately $500,000 in 1992.

The initial proposal included a soccer field, basketball court, volleyball pit, playground, covered picnic area, and a walking loop just under one half-mile in length.

Planners also hope to include interpretive nature markers in some places in the park. The plan called for between 45 and 50 parking spaces.

The plan has changed slightly since the December meeting, with the elimination of the volleyball pit and the addition of parking spaces and a second entrance to the lot.

The developed area of the park will encompass approximately eight acres.

At the first meeting, residents had complained that Glen Road would not be able to handle the traffic resulting from a soccer field.

However, since the park is designated as a local park, park regulations require that there be opportunities for active recreation in the plan.

After the meeting, the park plan would be further refined and then presented to the Planning Board. After approval it would need to be placed into the Capital Improvements Program. As a result, development of the park will not take place for several years.
