Dining Out for Life 2004

<bt>On Thursday, March 11, Sylvana's will donate 25 percent of dinner sales to the Food & Friends' Dining Out For Life 2004 campaign. Food & Friends prepares, packages and delivers meals and groceries to nearly 1,000 people living with HIV/AIDS and other life-challenging illnesses throughout Washington D.C. and 14 counties in Maryland and Virginia, including Fairfax County. <sh>Teen Assaulted

<bt>A 17-year-old Herndon area girl was assaulted as she walked to school on Monday, March 1. According to Fairfax County Police, at approximately 6:25 a.m., the victim reported she was walking in the 2100 block of Monaghan Drive when she was approached by a man dressed in black and wearing a mask. The man grabbed her, pulled her between two nearby houses and punched her then ran away.

The suspect was described as 5 feet 10 inches to 6 feet tall and weighing between 160 and 180 pounds. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 703-691-2131 or Crime Solvers at 800-673-2777.

<sh>House Fire

<bt>Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department units responded to a house fire at 1306 Lopp Court Wednesday, March 3, at approximately 2:15 p.m.

The first arriving units reported smoke and heavy fire coming from the first and second floors and the roof; and brought the fire under control within 30 minutes. The two-story home was vacant at the time and there were no injuries reported. Damage is estimated at $475,000. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

<sh>Public Forum

<bt>The Town of Herndon's Joint Communications Committee will hold a public forum Wednesday, March 24, at 7 p.m., in the Herndon Council Chambers, 765 Lynn St.

The purpose of the forum is to solicit comments and suggestions for improvements from residents and the development community regarding the public hearing process for various applications before the Town Council and Planning Commission.

<sh>Parenting Workshop

<bt>The Greater Herndon Community Coalition and the Herndon Pyramid PTAs are sponsoring a parenting workshop, "How to Motive the Unmotivated Student," Wednesday, March 24, beginning at 7 p.m., at the Herndon High School lecture hall, 700 Bennett St.

Dr. Peter Spevak, a clinical psychologist at the Center for Applied Motivation, will be the guest speaker. The workshop is geared toward parents of fifth-12th graders, however anyone is welcome.

<sh>Arts Foundation Seeks Board Members

<bt>The newly-formed Herndon Foundation for the Cultural Arts is working on establishing the Foundation's permanent board of directors. The Town of Herndon will be responsible for filling six positions on this board. Of particular interest are those individuals with experience in the following areas: arts or educational background; management skills; publicity expertise; fund raising; financial or banking experience.

Anyone who is interested in serving should complete a "Talent Bank" application by Friday, March 26. Anyone with a talent bank application already on file who is interested in serving should contact the Town Clerk's office to update the application.
