Herndon's June Yard of the Month contest winners are Diane D'Amico and Phil Goetkin. Located at 810 Mosby Hollow Drive, their yard features formal and informal gardens with a variety of flowers, ornamental grasses and plants. The owners do all of the work on the garden themselves and continually hone their skills by attending gardening symposiums and classes, participating in the Fairfax County Master Gardeners program and visiting gardens.

As winners of Yard of the Month, the couple will receive a $100 gift card to Home Depot and a green thumb sign to display in their yard for the month of June.

In addition to the overall Yard of the Month award, two other yards were selected for recognition and prizes. Robert Rudine's garden at 818 Alabama Drive received the second highest score in the competition. Robert and Patricia Cookston's yard at 1254 Magnolia Lane was the judging committee's third pick.

The Town of Herndon and the Cultivating Community Committee are still seeking nominations for the Yard of the Month Awards for July, August and September. To obtain Yard of the Month nomination forms, go to the town's Web site at www.herndon-va.gov and click on "What's New" then "Yard of the Month Awards." Yards will be judged by members of the Cultivating Community Committee, a group formed to promote neighborhood beautification and enrich the quality of life in Herndon neighborhoods.
