Coleslaw, Hula Hoops at Clifton Farmers Market

This Sunday is the Fourth of July — a time when people's thoughts turn to fireworks, festivities and — in Clifton, at least — coleslaw. Yep, that's right. Starting out the day's fun in a tasty and unique way, Deb Dillard, who runs the Clifton Farmers Market, is holding the first annual King or Queen of Coleslaw contest.

It's open to everyone; participants do not need to live in Clifton. Just come to the farmers market in the parking lot next to the post office on Chapel Road, Sunday, by 8:55 a.m. Contestants should go to the coffee stand there with 1/2 cup of their best homemade slaw, their name and the recipe sealed in an envelope.

The winner will be chosen by a member of the Clifton Fire Department, will receive a trophy and will have his or her recipe sent out in the next week's town e-mail.

But that's not all. Slated for 10 a.m. at the farmers market is a Hula Hoop Playoff. All age groups are invited. Winners in each age category will be asked to compete in Clifton's park, later in the day, to determine the town hula hoop champ.

Face painting and juggling demonstrations will also take place during the regular, farmers market hours of 8 a.m.-noon. And, oh yes, those coming to the market for farm-fresh produce and other treats will also find lots of delectable items.

Dillard says this Sunday will be a good time to buy all sorts of vegetables — especially roasting corn, plus blueberries, watermelon and honey. And Dave's Candy will be there with homemade syrups for cooking and desserts.
