Kill and Report Northern Snakehead Fish
In late May, following several Northern snakehead fish sightings, Maryland Department of Natural Resources Fisheries Service staff began instructing anglers to kill all Northern snakehead fish that are caught, retain the fish, and report them to DNR. This action is necessary to assess the number of these fish in the Potomac and the corresponding threat level to the ecosystem.
Northern snakehead fish are a highly invasive fish species introduced from Asia. They have the potential to quickly harm the Potomac River's native wildlife. Once established, eradication of the snakehead may be impossible.
