<sh>Fairfax Man Indicted

<bt>A Fairfax County grand jury on Monday indicted Edward Sliter, 21, of 12100 block of Goodwood Drive in Fairfax, for felony hit-and-run. Police believe that, on April 24, while driving a 1994 Oldsmobile Cutlass east on Route 29, he struck a 32-year-old West Virginia man with his car, severing the man's left arm.

The victim was Christopher Pinkerton of Barboursville, W. Va. Here for a brief visit, he was walking back to the hotel where he was staying but, being unfamiliar with the area, he got lost. He was approaching West Ox Road in Fairfax, around 3:30 a.m., when the hit-and-run occurred.

The driver fled, but a passing motorist saw Pinkerton, immediately called 911 and stayed with him until emergency personnel arrived. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition, but was released three days later.

After the incident, police looked for a damaged, older-model, Oldsmobile Cutlass Cierra. Investigation lead them to Sliter's home — where such a vehicle was found — and on April 26, he surrendered to police. He's scheduled to enter a plea Sept. 8 in Circuit Court.

<sh>Fairfax Teen Wins Gold Medal at Biology Olympiad

<bt>Kay Aull of Fairfax won a gold medal at the 2004 International Biology Olympiad which took place in Australia two weeks ago, competing against 163 other students from 42 different countries. As reported in last week's edition of The Fairfax Connection, Aull, a 2004 Thomas and Jefferson High School of Science and Technology graduate, went to Australia to compete with students from around the world in their knowledge of theoretical and applied biology.

The four-member U.S. team, of which Aull was a member, was also the first team in the International Biology Olympiad's 15-year history to have all its teammates earn gold medals. No other team has successfully accomplished that task, and 2004 is only the second year that the United States has sent a team to the competition. The 16 gold medals were awarded to the top 10 percent of students.

Each team member of the U.S. team in turn earned their spots at the U.S. Biology Olympiad, which was conducted at George Mason University in late June. This was the second year that Aull has participated in the International Biology Olympiad.

The U.S. team was sponsored by the Tysons-based Center for Excellence in Education. Aull will attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology this fall.
