RA To Hold Parks Public Hearing

<bt>Reston Association is holding a public forum about parks, recreation and open space in the community on Tuesday, July 20. The homeowners association is developing a 10-year action plan on the issue and is seeking input about what residents like and do not like. The forum is scheduled for Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the community center at Lake Anne Village Center.

<sh>Don't Swim in Lakes, RA Warns

<bt>Reston Association officials reminded residents last week that it is illegal to swim in Reston's lakes. Swimming is only permitted for a few property owners around Lake Anne and during sanctioned events, such as the upcoming Reston Triathalon. Several athletes have contacted RA over the last month to ask if they could train for the triathalon in the lakes, but RA officials said swimming in the lakes is trespassing. "We don't want people to get a fine and have to go through all the trouble that comes with it," said Karen Monaghan, RA's spokeswoman.

<sh>SLHS Wins MetLife Grant

<bt>South Lakes High School was named as one of 25 schools nationwide to receive a $3,000 Bridge Builders grant from the MetLife Foundation. This marks the second year in a row that South Lakes has been selected as a recipient of the grant. It is intended to help schools strengthen ties with the surrounding neighborhoods and community and is awarded to schools with large numbers of low-income students and underrepresented minorities. Last year, South Lakes used the grant money to hold international parent receptions, publish a student magazine for students in the English Speakers of Other Languages program, and to send ESOL students on a bus trip to George Mason University.

<sh>Car Show to Benefit At-Risk Youth

<bt>Moore Cadillac, a Vienna car dealership, is holding a car show at Reston Town Center on Friday to raise funds for Youth for Tomorrow, a residential group home for at-risk teenagers in Bristow. The car dealer will donate $5,000 to the charity and will hold a raffle to raise additional funds for the organization. The car show will feature several new Cadillacs, Hummers, concept cars and classic Cadillacs from 1941 and 1961. The event will be held this Friday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
