Chabad at Tysons event. Learn how to make sushi on Wednesday, Jan. 14, 7:30 p.m., at the home of Melissa Sporn, 1507 Linden Hurst Ave., McLean. Cover charge $10. Class participants learn the fundamentals of making cucumber rolls and advance to the ever-popular California roll. Lesson ranges from "addressing your mat" and learning the proper rolling and fingering techniques for sushi, to mastering the recipe for the perfect sushi rice. The Shepherd's Center of Oakton-Vienna hosts its open house and registration for the winter session of Adventures in Learning from 10 a.m.-12 p.m., at the Seventh Day Adventist Church, 344 Courthouse Road, Vienna. The registration fee of $30 ($20 for Friends of the Shepherd's Center) covers four classes each Thursday from Jan. 15-March 4. Classes include Tai Chi, World Affairs, Writing Your Life Story, Sharing Poetry, Immigration-Personal Stories, Bridge, and a health series on Loss. A beginning computer class has an additional fee of $10, and a drawing class has an additional fee of $25. A brown bag lunch break provides time for socializing with new and old friends.

"DaVinci Code" discussion. Pastor George W. Evans Jr. leads a discussion about the novel "The DaVinci Code," by Dan Brown. The Lutheran Church of the Redeemer in McLean invites members of the general public to its Faith and Life Forums. These programs feature a speaker followed by discussion relating to the topic of living one's Christian faith on a daily basis.

On Sunday, Jan. 18, Dr. Denise Dombowski Hopkins, professor of the Old Testament at Wesley Theological Seminary, discusses the current state of research on the Dead Sea Scrolls.

On Sunday, Jan. 25, Redeemer member Will Moser, who has had a number of overseas assignments, discusses his family's experiences with finding churches at which to worship in the course of such assignments.

"Handing Down Bigotry." On Sunday, Jan. 25, Richard Kiniry will speak on "Handing Down Bigotry." Will today's children inherit a world of conflict and turmoil? Emmanuel Lutheran Church has a full range of education, music, worship and outreach programs. Traditional worship is at 8 and 11 a.m., in the rich Lutheran tradition of liturgical song mixed with music of the masters, spirituals and contemporary Christian music. The Lutheran Church of the Redeemer has added a contemporary service at 9:45 a.m. on Sunday, supplementing its traditional worship services at 8:30 and 11 a.m. Modern praise music is sung, accompanied by a band of nine musicians on electric keyboard, bass and acoustic guitars, trumpet and drums.

Concurrently at 9:45, the church holds a Faith and Life forum on subjects to strengthen one’s Christian faith, adult Bible study and Sunday School for children age 3 through high school. Nursery is available at all services.

St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church, located at 1830 Kirby Road in McLean, invites all to come for contemporary worship the first Sunday of every month at noon. This new service will incorporate uplifting music; a warm, friendly, casual atmosphere; and interesting sermons.
