Kirk Kincannon will be the new director of the city’s Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities. City Manager Philip Sunderland made the announcement earlier this week.
“I am very pleased to appoint Kirk as director of recreation and parks,” Sunderland said. “His extensive experience and background, and his familiarity with the department, the city government and the Alexandria community, make him the right person for the job. With the leadership and dedication he will provide, the recreation department will continue to provide programs and services of the highest quality for Alexandrians.”
Kincannon is a certified parks and recreation professional who has served as deputy director of the department for four years. In all, he has 23 years of experience in the administration and management of recreation programs and facilities.
Prior to coming to Alexandria, Kincannon served as director of Wythe County, Va, Parks and Recreation Department for five years and was a parks specialist and assistant manager for the Fairfax County Park Authority for nine years. He is a native of Northern Virginia.
“I am thrilled at Kirk’s selection,” said Sandra Whitmore, who is retiring as director of the department. “He will do an excellent job.”
Kincannon will assume his new position on March 5.
