On Dec. 4, five Herndon homes and the Herndon Masionic Lodge were open to the community to visit as a part of the 19th annual Herndon Homes Tour sponsored by the Herndon Historical Society.
"It was wonderful," said Carol Bruce, co-chair of the event. "We're just thrilled after two years of snow and losing money that we can contribute now."
Bruce said this year the tour sold more than 300 tickets and saw an excess of 400 tour participants.
As a part of the event, tour-goers were able to view homes ranging in history from a home built in 1876 by the town's first mayor Isaiah Bready to a more recent 1977 home, in addition to viewing floral arrangements done by local florists and learning each house's history.
Although the group has yet to decide how or where the money from the tour will go, Bruce said in the past they have donated it closer to the next tour event for promotional purposes. This year — because the tour was so successful — Bruce said they may decide to donate the money at an earlier date.
In the past, the funds have gone towards plaques designating and recognizing historic structures in town, the Herndon Business and Professional Women's scholarship fund, the Herndon Veteran's Memorial building fund and the Neighborhood Resource Center.
