Army Pvt. Sung H. Kim has graduated from the Defense Language Institute English Language Center at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. The graduate received English as a Second Language training in preparation to enter technical training courses in specific career fields conducted by the U.S. military departments. Kim, an infantryman, is the son of Joseph Kim of Alexandria.

Navy Midshipman Mackenzie J. White, son of Jean N. Pruitt-White and Allan W. White of Alexandria, recently took part in

summer training at sea. White, a U.S. Naval Academy student served aboard the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk, forward deployed to Yokosuka, Japan. During his summer training cruise, he received hands-on training in ship handling, navigation, seamanship, communications, weapons systems and ship's damage control and fire fighting. White is a 2003 graduate of T.C. Williams High School.

Air Force Airman Christina A. Lietzow has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

Lietzow is the daughter of Marlene and Jay Lietzow of Estates Drive, Alexandria. She is a 2000 graduate of Robert E. Lee High School, Springfield.

Eric M. Duechle has entered basic cadet training at the U.S. Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, Colo., in preparation to enter the first academic year at the academy. The six-week, two-phased orientation program trains men and women to meet the rigorous mental and physical challenges of a cadet. He is the son of Elisa Duechle of Alexandria and Steven Duechle of Erlanger, Ky. Duechle is a 2004 graduate of T.C. Williams High School.

Joanne Lukens of Alexandria was recognized for her entry in the Pacific Northwest Writers Association 2004 Literary Contest. Her work, titled "The Bean Picker" won second place in the Juvenile Short Story/Picture Book category.
