<bt>Linda Waller is thankful for all the groups that provide refreshments for the Lee District Nights. As assistant to Supervisor Dana Kauffman (D-Lee), she coordinates the groups that provide drinks and treats for concert-goers.
“I think we’re the only series that serves refreshments,” Waller said. “We appreciate the service that the groups offer and know that it also gives them some exposure, especially the non profits.”
The Mount Vernon-Lee Chamber of Commerce provided the service at last week's concert. Executive Director Holly Dougherty was there with two of her children, Dan and Elisabeth. They handed out goodies from some of the sponsors, as well as drinks and sweets. Other groups that have helped this year are: Koinonia; Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce; CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate); Springfield-Franconia Host Lions; and Housing and Community Services of Northern Virginia.
Don’t forget the dog biscuits. Waller said that they not only encourage people to bring dogs, but always provide dog biscuits as well. In addition to finding groups to serve refreshments, Waller is also responsible for getting the sponsors who fund the program.
“The [Fairfax County] Park Authority does all the scheduling, but we raise money from the private sector,” Waller said.
To supplement the free refreshments, the Park Authority started selling ice cream and other treats as well. Paul Lefebvre, Park Authority employee, said that business has been great since they started a few weeks ago. They sell everything from Sponge Bob pops to ice cream bars.
“The one thing I like about the series is that all kinds of people come—families, seniors, little kids, and people in wheelchairs. It’s very mixed,” Waller said.
Radio King Orchestra, a big band that plays Big Band music, entertained last week's crowd with hits from Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra and more. The rain earlier in the evening cut down on the crowd, but the group that was there enjoyed the entertainment.
