New Computers, Online Attendance at Hoover

Interview with Hoover Principal Billie Jean Bensen

Is there anything you wish parents would do more?

“Continue to be involved with their children. Continue to supervise their children's homework. … Be tuned into appropriate school clothing.”

Is there anything you wish parents would do less?

“Try to make appointments less during school hours and have their children in school. I know sometimes that's not possible, but try to minimize it.”

What will be the biggest challenges facing Hoover this year?

“Continuing the strong academic focus. … A system-wide challenge will be the introduction of the new grading system and educating parents about it.”

What is your favorite thing about Hoover?

“It's an amazing place. The amount of time the staff puts in, and the amount of time the students put in. The support of the parents is amazing.”

What will be the biggest differences from last year to this year?

“The new bell schedule. There will be no more homeroom, or home base at the beginning of the day. First period begins at 7:55.

“We have all new computers. There will be online attendance, no more pen-and-paper attendance recording.”
