Rabid Fox Attacks
Three children were bitten by a fox in the Herndon area Monday, Aug. 9. At 2:45 p.m. a five-year-old girl was bitten by a fox, believed by the Fairfax County Animal Control to be rabid, in the 400 block of Madison Street. Fifteen minutes later, two children, a two-year-old and a seven-year-old, were bitten by a fox, believed to be the same fox, in the 400 block of Reneau Way. After biting the children, the fox fled down a sewer at Elden and Grove Streets. A rescue team responded to the scenes and treated the children's injuries, giving them a vaccination for rabies. Authorities said that a fox that is acting aggressive or acting bizarrely is most likely rabid, and should not be approached. Although the Herndon Police and Fairfax County Animal Warden are still searching for the animal, Fairfax County Public Information Officer Bud Walker said, "Animal control said this fox appeared to be in the late stages of being rabid." He said they gave the time period of 24 to 48 hours from the first biting at 2:45 p.m. Monday, for the fox to live before dying of the disease. But he urged residents to continue to keep an eye on their children and pets, adding if the animal is not found by Wednesday, it is most likely assumed dead.
House and Vehicle Fire
Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department responded to a vehicle and house fire at 13231 Stable Brook Way in the Frying Pan area at approximately 12:05 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 7. According to the report, first arriving units saw a pickup-truck engine compartment engulfed in flames, spreading to the roof of the house, which caught the soffit and eaves of the roof on fire and spread to the attic area. There was also smoke and water damage to the second floor of the house. A second alarm was struck several minutes after arrival and firefighters brought the fire under control in approximately 30 minutes. The occupants escaped without injury. The family of four has been displaced and the Red Cross is assisting the family. Estimated damage to the home and vehicle is approximately $75,000.
