Graduating high school seniors residing in or near Great Falls are invited to apply for two Alexander DeFilippis Scholarships being offered this spring. The Women's Association of St. Catherine of Siena Parish in Great Falls is awarding college scholarships to young men and women who "have served their community with their time and talent."
Membership in St. Catherine of Siena Parish is not required. All college-bound seniors who are local residents (Great Falls, Vienna, Reston, Herndon, McLean, Sterling, Potomac Falls and/or registered parishioners) will be considered.
The selection process will place major emphasis on the student's development of Christian character and demonstrated service to others by involvement in school, church or community projects. The student must also have a 2.5 or higher overall high school grade point average.
Two scholarships of $3,000 each will be awarded due to the generous community support for the St. Catherine of Siena Women's Association fashion show, luncheon and auction held at Riverbend Country Club.
Scholarship packages are available in the St. Catherine of Siena Parish office at 1020 Springvale Road, Great Falls. The deadline for submission of applications is May 15, 2004.
The Metropolitan Community Church of Northern Virginia sponsors a Pet Blessing Festival at Providence Park, West Drive in Fairfax City, on Saturday, May 8, at 1:30 p.m. In addition to the blessing ceremony, the festival features a memento photo booth, Saint Francis medals for the blessed pets and representatives from animal rescue organizations. For those whose pets may be overwhelmed by attending this event "in person," and for those whose pets have passed on, participants may bring a photograph for a memorial blessing. All dogs must be kept on a short leash; all other animals must be transported in a carrier or cage. Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Arlington sponsors the 21st annual Walk for Life on Sunday, May 2, at 11 a.m. at Paul VI High School in Fairfax. Check-in and on-site registration begin at 10 a.m. Registration is $15 for adults, $10 for seniors and $40 for a family of four. Participants receive a T-shirt and a complimentary lunch. A program using music, drumming, movement, song and prayer seeks to bring communities together as part of everyday life. The dances are cross-cultural using sacred phrases, chants, music and movements from many faith traditions. Efforts are to promote peace and integration within individuals and groups. There are no performers or audience and no experience is necessary. Donations are accepted.
