Volunteers of Year

<bt>The Reston Association’s community volunteers of the year awards were announced last week. The Peterson Family Foundation, Inc., a philanthropic organization that donated $250,000 for construction of the new Nature House, received the corporate award. The individual awards were given to Joe Ritchey and Ken Andrews. Ritchey, through Friends of Reston for Community Projects, has raised 40 percent of the funding for Nature House and has financed the marketing campaign out of his own wallet. Andrews, chairman of RA’s environmental advisory committee, helped rework Reston’s watershed management plan and was a key player in the effort to restore Reston’s streams.

<sh>Woman Charged in Carwash Death

<bt>Mixcie Robinson was arrested April 15 for reckless driving in the death of Gary Allan Ferriera, a Reston resident. Ferriera died while getting his car cleaned at a car wash on Friday, Feb. 27 at about 1:30 p.m. Ferriera, 53, of Breton Court, drove a 1994 Cadillac to the Best Car Wash, located at 3009 Annandale Road in the Annandale area to get it washed. The car was washed and Ferriera was waiting for it to be dried. During this time Robinson, 33, of Kings Chapel Road in the Falls Church area, who was employed by the car wash, got into a 2002 Lincoln Town Car to drive it to the area where the cars are manually dried. For an undetermined reason, Robinson drove the car about 30 feet at a high rate of speed, striking Ferriera, the Cadillac and a 2003 Silverado pick-up truck. Ferriera was pinned between the Town Car and the Cadillac and was side-swiped along with the car. Robinson then continued across four lanes of Annandale Road and the car came to rest in the parking lot of the Westlawn Shopping Center. Ferriera was transported to Inova Fairfax Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries sometime during the night.
