Route 1 is a little cleaner this week, thanks to the efforts of the Mount Vernon Coalition, which organized this year's Green Day. Paige Weber, vice-president of the Coalition, said that 28 bags of trash were collected. Also collected were old political signs and knocked-down road signs.
"I'm pleased with what we got; it [the trash] gets less and less each year. I would have liked to have done more, but we need some more volunteers," she said.
In addition to the individual volunteers, local businesses like Roy Rogers, Cyprus Heating & Air Conditioning and Dak's Grill, took bags and cleaned up around their own properties. Weber said that the area which needed the most attention, the vacant space across from Mount Vernon Plaza, did get cleaned up. There was another area that she would have liked to have tackled, but an 18-wheeler was parked in that spot.
Scott Brady, Republican candidate running against U.S. Rep. James P. Moran Jr. (D-8), collected six bags of trash. He also found some money, which he donated to the Coalition.
