South Lakes High School Theatre Arts students will be canvassing throughout Reston on Saturday, April 17 to promote their upcoming Spring Musical, "Little Shop of Horrors" and to raise funds for Theatre Arts Boosters. South Lakes High School Theatre Boosters' mission is to provide financial and hands on support to the Theatre Arts Program, and to enrich the theatre experience for the entire community. Some of the Boosters goals are to improve the lighting and sound systems in the high school's Little Theatre, to install a marquee over the box office, to create a trophy case for performing arts and awards, to help purchase a new piano for the school, and to enrich the education and overall experience of the Theatre Students. Jessica Rugel, a student at George Mason University, has been selected to receive the Department of Communication "Award for Excellence in Communication." This award is presented for academic excellence to graduating seniors with an overall grade point average of 3.75 or higher. Jessica, a Reston resident, is the daughter of Anne Goldstein-Rugel and Gerard Rugel, and is a 1999 graduate of South Lakes High School. Jessica is employed part-time at Laurel Learning Center, the child care program of Reston Interfaith, Inc.
Paul VI Catholic High School sophomore Jeff Robertson, son of Craig and Carroll Robertson of Herndon, was named one of five All-Stars at the first annual Georgetown University Advanced Placement European History Bowl held March 20 on the Georgetown campus. Robertson led a Paul VI team of five sophomores that included Matt Chauvin, son of Gerry and Michelle Chauvin of Reston.
The South Lakes High School Little Theatre will present "Little Shop of Horrors" on April 22, 23, 24, 29, 30 and May 1. Shirin Aranee of South Lakes High School was one of nine Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) students to be named a winner of the National Scholastic Art Awards, administered by the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers. National winners will be recognized at a special ceremony at Carnegie Hall in New York City on June 10. Gold Award art will be exhibited at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., from June 19 through August 2. Aranee received a Gold Award in the Painting category.

The sophomore class is holding the "Fifth Avenue Gala" silent auction at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 30. Under the baton of Director Grayson Fore, the South Lakes High School Wind Ensemble received "superior" ratings from two judges and "excellent" ratings from the two others for their performance at District XII Band Festival last weekend. The South Lakes High School Symphonic Band received "excellent" ratings for their performance. Under the direction of Richard Crane, the Langston Hughes Middle School Symphonic Band received "excellent" ratings for their performance.
