Even though Hurricane Isabel washed out two days of competition during this year's Northern Virginia Senior Olympics, the games continue this week.
Last Thursday's events, which included yo-yo, women's and men's basketball throws, doubles tennis, horseshoes and duplicate bridge will take place this Thursday, Sept. 25, at the same places and times. Last Friday's competition, which included various swimming events, cribbage and mixed doubles tennis, have been rescheduled for Friday Sept. 26, again, at the same times and locations as before.
Even the start of the games, originally slated for Saturday, Sept. 13, had to be pushed back a day because of rain.
"Out of all the folks that registered, everyone showed up," said Judy Massabny, of the Arlington Office of Senior Adult Programs.
The games, originally set to take place over 10 days from Sept. 13-25, are sponsored by the cities of Alexandria, Fairfax and Falls Church and the counties of Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun and Prince William. The events were held at 17 locations spread out through Falls Church, Alexandria, Centreville, Arlington, Dumfries, Franconia, Leesburg, Sterling and Annandale.
The closing ceremonies are Sunday, Sept. 28, at the Falls Church Community Center and will include guest speakers, buffet and medals ceremony.
"We had close to 500 people signed up to participate by the deadline, but we always have late registrations," Massabny said.
The remaining schedule of events, including locations and times, is available on the Web site www.novaseniorolympics.com or by calling 703-228-3600 ext. 9996.
