Navy Construction man Apprentice Tae J. Kim, son of
Keum R. and Dae C. Kim of Springfield, recently reported for duty with Naval Mobile Construction Battalion Three, Port Hueneme, Calif. Kim joined the Navy in April 2002.
Navy Midshipman Jeffrey E. Alexander, son of Katharine S. and Robert A. Alexander of Springfield, is halfway through an eight-month deployment to the Arabian Gulf while assigned to the amphibious transport dock ship USS Nashville, home ported in Norfolk, Va. Alexander is a 2001 graduate of West Springfield High School. During the first half of the deployment, sailors and marines from Alexander's ship operated day and night inserting Marines from the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit into Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom. They also participated in two major exercises and made a port visit to Trieste, Italy.
Coast Guard Cadet Kristine M. Rice, daughter of
Coast Guard Capt. and Mrs. Thomas R. Rice of Springfield, recently enrolled as a cadet at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, New London, Conn. At the academy, the 2003 graduate of Lake Braddock High School will undergo four years of extensive study in engineering, mathematics, physical and marine sciences, management and government, Coast Guard history, military justice, marine biology, computer science, physics and a variety of elective courses leading to a baccalaureate degree. She will also participate in summer on-the-job training to gain professional experience aboard Coast Guard vessels and at shore installations.
Coast Guard Cadet Michael L. Flint, son of Jennifer E. and Richard W. Flint of Springfield, recently enrolled as a cadet at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, New London, Conn. At the academy, Flint will undergo four years of extensive study leading to a baccalaureate degree. An emphasis is also placed on physical fitness. During Flint's time at the Coast Guard Academy, he will participate in summer job training, which gives Flint the opportunity to gain professional experience aboard Coast Guard vessels and at shore installations. Flint is a 2003 graduate of Annandale High School of Annandale.
