<sh>Irish Festival at Van Dyck

<bt>The O'Neill-Malcolm Branch of Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann (CCE) is sponsoring an Irish traditional music festival on Saturday, Sept. 13, from 12 to 6 p.m. at Van Dyck Park, 3730 Old Lee Highway, Fairfax.

The festival will have three stages of traditional Irish music and dance. The Greater Washington Ceili Club will perform set dances, while area dancing schools will showcase some step dancing. Irish singing star Danny Doyle is expected to perform, as well as the Hunt Family, whose seven children play the fiddle.

The evening will conclude with a dance at the John C. Wood Complex at 7:30 p.m.

This is the second year that Fairfax will have the Irish festival. For years, the festival had been at Glen Echo Park in Md., but it moved to Fairfax because of construction at the park, according to Bob Hickey, branch chair.

Refreshments will be available, and Hickey suggests festivalgoers bring lawn chairs and blankets to enjoy the performances. Admission is free, but donations will be welcome. For more information, call 703-978-8265.

People should come "to hear the great Irish traditional music," Hickey said.

<sh>Sobriety Checkpoint Results

<bt>Fairfax County Police conducted a sobriety checkpoint in the Fair Oaks District on Saturday, Aug. 30. Approximately 551 cars passed through the checkpoint conducted in the north and southbound lanes on Blake Lane, between Five Oaks Road and Bel Grade Court in the Oakton area. One motorist was arrested for driving while intoxicated. Four other traffic offenses were also cited.

<sh>Lee Highway Milling, Repaving Begins

<bt>This week, the City of Fairfax will begin milling and repaving Lee Highway (Route 29/50) in both directions between Eaton Place and Stafford Drive. The work was to begin on Tuesday, Sept. 2, but didn't occur because of rain.

Due to the high volume of daytime traffic on Lee Highway, the milling and repaving will take place at night, from 8 p.m. to 5 p.m., weather permitting.

The work is expected to last about two weeks. Weather may impact the start and finish dates.

For information, call 703-385-7810.
