<sh>Rolling Road Delay
<bt>Rolling Road in Springfield will be reduced from two lanes to one lane between Edinburg Drive and Fullerton Road, Oct. 20-27, from 9:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Motorists should expect major delays during rush hours and are encouraged to take alternate routes, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.
The closure is necessary as crews complete construction to realign the intersection at Rolling Road, Fullerton Road and Edinburgh Drive. The $1 million improvement project will increase capacity and relieve congestion created by the Springfield Interchange Improvement Project. When the intersection is completed next month, motorists will have additional turn lanes, and the connection to Fullerton road will re-open.
Beginning Monday, crews will mill and remove the old pavement and add 11 inches of new road material to allow a seamless transition from the old roadway to the new.
<sh>Robbery and Sexual Assault
<bt>A 16-year-old Springfield-area girl was robbed and sexually assaulted on Oct. 17, about 10:50 p.m. In the 7200 block of Monticello Boulevard in the Springfield area, the victim was walking home from the bus stop when she was approached by a man who produced a knife and demanded money. The suspect kissed the victim and fondled her, Fairfax County Police reported. He then fled the area with jewelry from the victim. The victim was not injured. The suspect was described as white, in his 20s, about 5 feet tall and weighing 145 pounds. He had brown hair and brown eyes and was wearing a white T-shirt with black pants.
<sh>Smoke Alarm Alerts Occupants
<bt>Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department Units responded to a house fire on Friday, Oct. 17, at approximately 7:30 a.m., in the Burke area. The two-story, split-level home is located at 6651 Newchandler Court. First-arriving units reported fire showing from the front and roof of the structure. Firefighters began an aggressive attack and extinguished the fire in 15 minutes. No injuries were reported. Two adults were at home when the fire started and were alerted by the smoke alarms. Three adults and two children were displaced. The American Red Cross is assisting the displaced family. Fire investigators determined the cause to be a malfunctioning dryer located in the second-floor laundry room.
<ro>Unattended Cooking Oil Ignites
<bt>Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department Units responded to a house fire on Friday, Oct. 17, at approximately 2:20 p.m., in the Burke area. The single-family home is located at 9521 Vandola Court.
First-arriving units reported smoke showing from the side of the structure. The fire was contained to the kitchen area of the structure. Firefighters brought the fire under control in five minutes. One occupant was treated and transported to Access of Fairfax for treatment of smoke inhalation. The fire displaced four adults and one child. The American Red Cross is assisting the displaced families. Fire investigators determined the cause to be accidental, resulting from unattended cooking oil on the stove. Damage is estimated at $75,000.
