Cathy Belter has served four years on the Fairfax County School Board, coming to the position after many years as a PTA activist at the state, local and national levels.
Belter has been a more cooperative voice on the sometimes contentious and partisan school board. She brings with her an understanding of the range of needs children have, from experiences with her own children. In her capacity as a school board member, she spends a lot of time in the local schools and supports lower class sizes starting with any class with more than 30 students in it.
Belter is a moderate voice, and institutional knowledge will be at a premium on the new school board.
Belter's challenger, Scott Martin, is a first-time candidate, a professor at George Mason University, with children just entering the schools. He is a creative thinker and a problem solver whose ideas should be considered by the board. We look forward to his continued activism and a future candidacy.
