<sh>Bank Robbery in Kingstowne
<bt>On Saturday, Oct. 4, a local bank inside a grocery store was robbed with shoppers all around. At approximately 2:25 p.m., a man approached a bank teller at the SunTrust Bank in the Kingstowne Shopping Center and presented her with a note. The teller gave the man an undisclosed amount of money and he left the store, driving away in a dark-colored, older-model sedan. No weapon was displayed.
SunTrust Bank is located inside the Safeway grocery store at 5980 Kingstowne Center in the Kingstowne area. The man is described as black, in his late 30s, 6 feet tall, 160-180 pounds, with a thin beard and mustache. He was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, light gray hat and aviator glasses. <sh>Bias Attack
<bt>Fairfax County Police are investigating an apparent bias crime that slightly injured a Woodbridge woman. The 47-year-old woman was loading packages into her car at the Springfield Plaza, 6300 Springfield Plaza, on Oct. 5, at approximately 1 p.m., when she felt a pain in her upper body. At the same time she felt the pain, she heard a man make a religious and ethnic slur to her and then leave. The victim was transported to Inova Fairfax Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The suspect is described as white, in his teens, wearing baggy jeans, a blue top and a dark blue baseball cap. <sh>Open House at Renovated Governmental Center
<bt>Various state and local elected officials will be on hand at 10 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 18, for the dedication and ribbon-cutting celebrating the opening of the newly renovated Springfield District Governmental Center, located at 6140 Rolling Road, Springfield. The open house of the Springfield District Supervisor's Office and the Police and Fire and Rescue stations will feature a variety of activities and will begin immediately following the ceremony, around 11 a.m. For more information about the event, call the Springfield District Supervisor's Office at 703-451-8873.
<sh>Garfield Turns 50
<bt>Garfield Elementary School, a Fairfax County public school, will celebrate its 50th anniversary with music, dancing, and restaurant fare from 3:30-8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 16. The community is invited to enjoy samples from Springfield-area restaurants, musical entertainment by Garfield alumni and current staff members, and tours of the building, followed by an evening assembly with an emphasis on dancing through the ages.
