Car Crash Kills Woman
<bt>A 39-year-old Ashburn woman was killed last week following a collision a Route 28 and Westfields Boulevard in Centreville. According to Fairfax County police, Kathy Varney was turning left onto Westfields from Route 28 south, Monday, Nov. 10, at 3:31 p.m. when a dump truck traveling north on Route 28 crashed into her Ford Explorer.
Witnesses reported that each driver had a red light in their direction of travel. But that makes the cause of the accident even more puzzling. "We're still trying to piece it together," said Sgt. Jeff Gossett. "We're still investigating this."
Varney was Medevaced to Inova Fair Oaks Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The driver of the dump truck, Patricia Jo Keener or Manassas, was also taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Police say both drivers were wearing seatbelts and alcohol was not a factor. They also say charges are pending the outcome of the investigation.
<sh>Hot Tub Death Investigated
<bt>A preliminary autopsy has been completed and detectives are awaiting toxicology results to determine why a 20-year-old Fairfax woman died Nov. 8 in a hot tub. The woman was identified as Cynthia Kerr, and she was visiting friends in the 5000 block of Oakcrest Drive.
Residents there found her dead in the hot tub around 3 a.m. and performed CPR on her until fire and rescue personnel arrived. Fairfax County police are still investigating the circumstances of her death.

<sh>Board OKs Land Acquisition
<bt>The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors on Monday approved the county's acquisition of the land needed for installation of a traffic signal at Route 29 and Bull Run Post Office Road in Centreville. Planned are left-turn lanes in both directions on Bull Run Post Office and on Route 29 south, as well as a right-turn lane on Route 29 north.
Seven parcels of land are involved, and Luck Stone Corp. owns four of them. The county will now proceed with negotiations to purchase this property so VDOT may eventually install the signal.
<sh>You Can't Get There From Here
<bt>As of the week of Dec. 5, residents will no longer be able to reach the Sully Historic Site from Route 28 south. Susan Shaw of VDOT said Tuesday that "the signal for right in, right out traffic on Route 28 north will remain." However, a sign will be posted advising drivers that, to access Sully from Route 28 south, they'll have to turn around and take Route 28 north.
