<cal2>A picnic and fishing derby for children and adults with disabilities will take place on Saturday, May 24 at 11 a.m. at the Arlington/Fairfax Chapter of the Izaak Walton League in Centreville. There will be a fishing derby, hayrides, archery shoot and air rifle shooting. The menu will include hamburgers, hotdogs, baked beans, potato salad and more. Prizes will be awarded for the fishing derby. Guests from the surrounding area schools are invited. Historic St. John's Episcopal Church will host an Artisan & Craft Expo and Community Used Book Sale on Saturday, May 24 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Community and parish crafters will join artisans from the Northern Virginia Handcrafter's Guild to display their wares. Papa John's will be onsite selling pizza. In addition, local historian Paula Elsey will be onsite from 10 a.m. to noon and again from 5-6 p.m. signing copies of the book "Stone Ground: A History of Union Mills," which she edited.
The Centreville American Legion Auxiliary will collect unserviceable American flags in front of the Giant at Centrewood Plaza in Centreville on Saturday, May 24 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in honor of Memorial Day.
Many Americans show their patriotism by proudly flying the American flag, but some of these flags are getting worn and tattered. Do not throw away your worn out flag. There is a proper ceremony whereby flags are retired with the dignity they deserve. The Flag Code suggests that, "when a flag has served its useful purpose, it should be destroyed, preferably by burning." American Legion Posts conduct Disposal of Unserviceable Flag Ceremonies on June 14, Flag Day. The event is scheduled for Saturday, May 31 at the Arlington/Fairfax Izaak Walton League Chapter in Centreville. The event has raised $86,000 to benefit St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. It is hosted by the Virginia Shooting Sports Association and the Arlington/Fairfax Chapter of the Izaak Walton League in Centreville. The event, open to the public, will consist of four-person teams and individuals competing in a trapshooting format. The format allows novices to compete alongside experienced shooters.
