TJ Offers Admission to 450 Students
<bt>Fairfax County Public Schools has offered admission to 450 students for the class of 2007 at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology. This number includes 30 additional students from underrepresented middle schools who were selected from the qualified pool of 800.
A total of 2,618 students applied for admission. Of the 450 who were accepted, 269, or 59.8 percent, are white; 3, or .7 percent, are black; 13, or 2.9 percent, are Hispanic; 136, or 30.2 percent, are Asian; 25, or 5.5 percent, are multiracial; and 4, or .9 percent, list “other” as their ethnicity. These numbers reflect a decrease from last year for both black and Hispanic applicants.
Of the group offered admission, 271, or 60 percent, are male and 179, or 40 percent, are female. The majority of the students, 344, or 76.4 percent, are from Fairfax County public schools, 55, or 12.2 percent, are from private schools, and 51, or 11.3 percent, are from out-of-county public schools.
<sh>FCPS Featured In Magazine
<bt>Fairfax County Public Schools is featured in the April 2003 issue of School Planning and Management magazine in an article focusing on its participation in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s EnergyStar program. The school system is projecting energy savings of $4.5 million annually from improvements in heating, ventilation, air conditioning, lighting, and energy systems as a result of the EnergyStar program.
An article titled, “Helping the Earth and the Budget,” chronicles the school system’s plan, beginning with collecting and calculating benchmark data, setting target goals, monitoring power management and setting up a pilot computer monitor power management pilot program at Herndon High School.
The computer monitor power management program will be in effect at all county public schools and centers by September; the school system anticipates a $600,000 cost savings as a result of this program.
<sh>Forum on After-School Programs
<bt>A forum to enhance after-school programs for Fairfax County middle school students will be held Saturday, May 31, beginning at 9 a.m., at Jackson Middle School, 3020 Gallows Road, Falls Church. Dubbed the Fairfax County After-School Network, the project is sponsored by the Fairfax Partnership for Youth in conjunction with Fairfax County Public Schools, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, Fairfax County School-Community Coalitions, Fairfax County Community and Recreation Services and Fairfax County Community Services Board.
The forum will present options to expand existing middle school after-school programs to include boosting academic achievement, providing social opportunities, teaching life skills, and reducing risky behaviors.
Participants in the forum will be able to provide input to expand the program and work on one of four subcommittees: Finding Resources, Building Partnerships, Advocacy and Policy or Ensuring Quality Programs.
Registration for the program begins at 8:30 a.m., and the program is free and open to the public.
