The Little River United Church of Christ, Annandale, will celebrate Lent with a series of Tuesday evening programs on "Poetry and Spirituality: Accessing the Sacred Through Poetry." The programs on March 25 and April 1 will be led by Eric Pankey and Jennifer Atkinson, both authors of several collections of poems and teachers in the Master of Fine Arts program in Creative Writing at George Mason University. This four-week series will explore poems from several cultures and poetic traditions and the intersection of poetry and the spiritual life. On April 8, they will be joined by calligraphy expert Michael Podestra, offering a presentation on "Calligraphy as Prayer" and poetry readings by poet and advocate Carol Zippert, who writes from the African American perspective. Beth El Hebrew Congregation will host Bernie Dean in his one-man performance of the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical "The Rothschilds" on Saturday, April 5 at 8 p.m. The musical tells how the Rothschild family usually associated with riches and wealth was actually a poverty stricken family that struggled to survive behind ghetto walls.
