A body found in Four Mile Run at Route 1 near the Arlington-Alexandria border Thursday morning, July 24, was identified as 22-year-old Juan Carlos Candia of Annandale. Candia and a friend were swept into Four Mile Run early Wednesday morning, July 23, while trying to cross a bike trail bridge near the 800 block of Arlington Mill Drive. The body was reported to Alexandria Police at 7:47 a.m. and was recovered by the Alexandria Fire Department.
The men were knocked into the creek sometime around midnight yesterday by high water caused by heavy rain. The friend, a 22-year-old Arlington man, was able to swim to shore and report the accident to police.
Arlington County Police and Fire Department personnel spent more than four hours searching a two-mile stretch of Four Mile Run for Candia. They were assisted by a U.S. Park Police helicopter equipped with infrared technology. At daybreak, police and firefighters resumed the visual search for another two hours.
At noon Wednesday, K-9 units from the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department, the Maryland-National Capital Park Police, and the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department's Urban Search and Rescue team joined the search. The search was suspended at approximately 6:30 p.m., Wednesday.
