<bt>Marshall High School did it again. Its one-act cutting of a three-hour play, “Journey of the Fifth Horse,” won the district trophy in the Liberty District’s theater competition last week.
It is the fifth year in a row Marshall has won the district title in the Virginia High School League’s one-act play competition, held last week at McLean High School.
Marshall senior Peter Van Valkenburgh, who has the lead role of Zoditcht, won the award for “best actor.”
Second place went to Woodson High School for “Laundry and Bourbon,” which also earned the “best actress” award for Jenny Saperstone’s portrayal as Elizabeth.
Both schools will compete with six other schools in the Northern Virginia regional competition at Herndon High School, on Saturday, Feb. 8, at 10 a.m. Their order of presentation will be decided on Wednesday.
Under rules of the one-act play competition, each performance is limited to 30 minutes, with a five-minute grace period.
Two schools each were selected from the Liberty, Concorde, Patriot, and National Districts to compete for the regional title on Saturday. The winners included Woodson, Westfield, Oakton, and Stuart in Fairfax County and Yorktown in Arlington.
Marshall won the Virginia state title in the one-act play competition in both 2000 and 2001.
