On Wednesday, Jan. 29 South Lakes hosted a luncheon and panel discussion between educators, parents, and administrators from Anne Arundel County, Maryland and South Lakes parents, teachers, administrators and students involved in the International Baccalaureate (IB) program. Anne Arundel County is preparing to adopt the IB program at several of its schools and approximately 30 Anne Arundel representatives came to last Wednesday’s event hoping to learn more about the program through interaction with members of the South Lakes community. The event drew considerable press coverage; reporters from major newspapers including the Washington Post and the Baltimore Sun were present.
The Theatre Arts Department has been invited to participate in a festival in Beijing, China this coming summer. In Beijing, South Lakes thespians plan to perform “Singin’ in the Rain,” this year’s spring musical. Theatre Arts students and parents will soon embark on fundraising projects in order to make the trip possible. Seniors who performed in Edinburgh, Scotland in the summer of 2000 are particularly excited by this second opportunity to participate in an international high school theater festival.
The BHS Step Team will entertain students and faculty at the Winter Pep Rally on Friday, Feb. 7 in preparation for its evening performance at South Lakes. The upcoming event will also feature step teams from several other area high schools. For more information, call Maria Harris at 703-715-4589.
