<sh>Traffic Fatality
<bt>A traffic fatality in the Franconia area took the life of a 36-year-old woman on Saturday, Dec. 13. About 11:45 a.m., 44-year-old Jose Santiago-Narvaez of Bay Vista Drive, in the Woodbridge area, was driving a Lowe's delivery vehicle (1999 Chevrolet box truck) westbound on Franconia Road. As he approached Brookland Road, he swerved to the right to avoid stopped traffic and drove up over the curb. The driver continued up onto the sidewalk, hit two signs and then the victim. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. At press time, the next of kin had not been notified. The crash is still under investigation.
<sh>Robbery Suspects Arrested
<bt>A man entered the Springfield Mall J.C. Penney store on Friday, Dec. 5, at 1:30 p.m. Entering the small appliances section, he pulled out a crumpled J.C. Penney bag, took a Kitchen-Aid mixer off of shelf and placed it in the bag, according to police. The man proceeded to a cash register, presented a receipt and stated he wanted a cash refund. The clerk complied, as store security officers watched the incident via store video cameras.
The security personnel contacted Fairfax County Police as the man left the store. He got into a waiting gold, 2000 Lincoln Navigator driven by another man, and the pair left the mall. A traffic stop was conducted, and both men were arrested without incident. Investigation revealed the SUV the men were driving had been reported stolen in 1999 from a car dealership in South Carolina. Germain Thompson, 38, and Byron K. Renn, 28, both from Cheraw, S.C., were charged with larceny by false pretense and grand larceny auto, according to police. Each man was held on a $10,000 bond.
<sh>Charges Filed in Fatal Crash
<bt>Fairfax County Police filed warrants for the arrest of Gregory Moldenhauer, 25, of Tartan View Drive in the Fairfax area. The warrants charge Moldenhauer with manslaughter in connection with a Dec. 13 fatal crash that occurred in the Chantilly area.
On Dec. 13, at about 12:30 a.m., Moldenhauer was driving a 2003 Acura RSX northbound on Walney Road, when he lost control of the vehicle. The car crossed over the southbound lanes, striking an embankment and a tree. The vehicle came to rest, partially overturned, on the passenger's side.
Thomas Bolt Jr., 27, of Penwith Court in the Chantilly area was a passenger in the car. Bolt was not wearing his seat belt and was pronounced dead at the accident scene.
Moldenhauer was med-evac’d to Inova Fairfax Hospital, where he remains, and where he is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Police allege that alcohol and speed were both factors in the arrest. They will serve Moldenhauer with the warrant when he is released from the hospital.
<sh>Alcohol Sting
<bt>The Traffic Safety Services Unit, along with the West Springfield District Neighborhood Patrol Unit, conducted an alcohol sting at 33 locations within the West Springfield District on Friday, Dec. 12. The sting is part of the Youth Alcohol Campaign and was conducted using underage Fairfax County Police cadets dressed in plain clothing, who attempted to purchase alcoholic beverages. According to police, the following locations improperly sold alcoholic beverages: 7-Eleven, 7822 Rectory Lane in the Annandale area; Giant Food Store, 8941 Ox Road in the Lorton area; Shoppers Food Warehouse, 9274 Old Keene Mill Road in the Burke area; Virginia ABC Store, 5739 Burke Centre Parkway in the Fairfax Station area. Twenty-nine other locations did not sell alcoholic beverages to the cadets. Four arrests were made in the four establishments where alcohol was sold to cadets, according to police.
