Although Alan Goodman is new to his post at Pyle, he’s familiar to many of the school’s families. “I know a lot of the families because they have kids at Whitman,” Goodman said.
Goodman has been with Montgomery County Public schools since 1975. He began his career as an English teacher at Springbrook High School. After teaching Argyle and Kennedy, he moved into administration, becoming the English Resource Teacher, similar to a department head, at Banneker Middle School and then Rockville High School.
“When I was head of an English Department, I enjoyed both aspects [teaching and administration] of my life,” he said.
In 2000, he left Rockville High and became an assistant principal at Whitman. “I decided to move into it full-time,” he said.
Although Goodman has missed the kind of relationship that teachers have with students, he is happy to have made the shift. “I enjoy the challenges and varieties of situations as an administrator.”
Even though he is not in front of a classroom every day, Goodman still knows that the students are the most important. “My most important job is the education of the students,” Goodman said.
Goodman started as principal at Pyle on Aug. 11. Although he does not expect parents to notice any sea changes immediately, he does expect there to be some changes. “I want to enhance the same things they’ve seen in the past,” Goodman said. “I’m trying to look for new ideas.”
Pyle’s longtime principal Charles Doran has taken over as the new principal at Thomas S. Wootton High School in Rockville.
