Like all of the soloists, Eva Freitag, 18, has been waiting for this year for a long time.
“It’s a great privilege,” said Freitag, a senior at Stone Ridge. “To have all the kids look up to you – you’re a role model to them.”
She is one of five dancers at Potomac Dance Centre to be selected as soloists for this year’s production, “Voice of Spring.” The show is scheduled for May 9 at 8 p.m., May 10 at 2 and 8 p.m. and May 11 at 4 p.m. in the Churchill auditorium.
Freitag has been dancing at the center since she was four and has been looking forward to her senior solo almost since she started. “I wouldn’t give it up for anything,” she said.
The other soloists, who have also been eagerly awaiting their turn in the spotlight, are equally excited. “I was just looking at [previous soloists] and wishing I could be there as well,” said Shaina Reid, 15, another soloist this year.
This year, the production will feature the choreography of Dawei Zhang. Zhang is in his first year as the director of the centre.
“He really knows his stuff,” said Reid. “Mr. Zhang has done a beautiful job of choreographing this.”
In addition to the five soloists, there will be two other groups of girls dancing.
“We have different levels to try and show the younger age girls better,” Zhang said.
A new addition this year will be a Chinese folk dance performed during the show. “The Potomac audience can see a little different style of dance,” Zhang said.
