Supporting the Troops

Oakton real estate office adopts a troop by sending care packages.

When realtor Rosi Sarson heard about her co-worker’s son-in-law serving in the war against Iraq, she wanted to do something that would show her support of the troops. With the agreement of everyone in the office of Weichert Realtors in Oakton, they decided to adopt the son-in-law’s troop by sending care packages.

In the 30 boxes they plan to send are coffee bags, CDs, magazines, candy, granola bars, potato chips, DVDs and handy wipes, among other supplies.

"We just want them to know that we love them," Sarson said, explaining that part of the impetus to send the care packages was coverage of anti-war protests in the news. Sarson and her whole family had served in the military.

To buy the $750-worth of supplies, everyone in the office chipped in. The Giant supermarket in Oakton gave the office a food gift certificate, and Interstate Van Lines of Springfield supplied them with boxes.

Realtor and Springfield resident Joan Taylor, whose son-in-law belongs to the troop they adopted, said her daughter and son-in-law appreciate the support. Her son, a Navy squadron commander, has three children.

"We’re just trying to show some support," Taylor said.

In each of the boxes is a note saying, "We are so proud of you! You are in our prayers! Come home safely & soon! Til then, enjoy the goodies."

As the office mates put the supplies in the boxes, they tried to figure out how to mask Christina Aguilera’s provocative photographs in the CD sleeve. They decided to take the sleeve out.

"I think it’s a great idea, and everybody should be supporting the troops,’ said realtor Emory Farmer.
