On Sept. 20, The Hunter Mill Defense League presented its First Annual Community Service Awards to individuals and organizations who have improved the quality of life and historic preservation in the Hunter Mill Road corridor.

Del. Jeannemarie Devolites (R-35th) and supervisors Gerald Connolly (D-Providence) and Stuart Mendelsohn (R-Dranesville) all received Locally Elected Official awards. Devolites received an award for sponsoring the Virginia Byway legislation for Hunter Mill Road. Connolly was recognized for his leadership in acquiring the Corbalis property for parkland, and adding language regarding equestrian uses to the county's new Residential Development Criteria. Mendelsohn was honored for his leadership in promoting safety and historic preservation on Hunter Mill Road.

Winners of Community Organization of The Year awards were leaders Linda Byrne of the Oakton Women's Club and George Lehnigk of Options for Oakton.

Renny Martin of the Sun Gazette Newspapers was named Media Person of the Year.

Ronald W. Stanton was posthumously given The Citizen of The Year award. Hereafter, the award will be known as the Ron Stanton Citizen of the Year Award to honor the Hunter Mill Corridor resident who best exemplifies perseverance, analytical skill and commitment to good government.

Robert Regan Burns of Reston is starring in his own game show on TNN. In each of the 20 episodes of the show entitled "Oblivious," Burns will appear undercover in normal daily situations and ask quiz questions of people who have no idea they are on a television game show or will win $20 for each correct answer. "Oblivious" began its run on Aug. 16. Check local listings for time.

Erin P. Dowe has graduated from the Army ROTC National Advanced Leadership Camp at Fort Lewis, Tacoma, Wash. Dowe is the daughter of Ray M. and Kathleen Dowe of West Ox Road in Herndon. She is a 1999 graduate of Paul VI Catholic High School in Fairfax.

Army National Guard Pfc. David G. Testa has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. Testa is the son of Paul Testa of Misty Water Drive, Herndon. He is a 2000 graduate of Herndon High School.

Matthew F. Greenspan has entered basic cadet training at the U.S. Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, Colo. in preparation to entering the first academic year at the academy. Greenspan is the son of Jack Greenspan of Rosedown Drive, Reston. He is a 2002 graduate of South Lakes High School.
