The Arlington Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) recently hosted Laura Reasoner Jones, Virginia American Association of University Women Education Advocate of the Year. She discussed her video “Tech-Savvy Girls.” The video will be made available for use in local schools to encourage young girls to become interested in technology.
The Simon Youth Foundation is offering scholarships to high school students. A one-time monetary award of $1,500 will be given to students planning to enroll in any accredited college, university or vocational-technical school who meet the program’s eligibility requirements. Marymount University will offer graduate programs in pastoral counseling beginning with the spring 2003 semester. Pastoral counseling utilizes faith-based and spiritual perspectives in the field of counseling and psychotherapy, in addition to traditional psychological practices. Keith Dowling, a graduate of Yorktown High School and the son of Catherine and Jay Dowling, has been awarded the George Shuman, Jr. and Mary Louise D’Olier Shuman Prize at Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pa. The prize is awarded to a sophomore man and women for their academic performance and contributions to extra curricular college and community activities.
Kathleen Malliarkis, a junior majoring in policy studies at the Syracuse University’s College of Arts and Sciences, participated in the Globalization program as part of the university’s Division of International Programs. Brian Welsh, a junior majoring in marketing at the University of Rhode Island, participated in the Australia program. Programs abroad at Syracuse offer internships, language study, traveling seminars, career studies and art and architecture studio work.
Army Reserve Pvt. Flora M. Lazo has arrived at Aberdeen Proving Ground in Aberdeen, Md. to complete the wheeled vehicle repairer advanced training course. A graduate of Yorktown High School, Lazo is the daughter of Victoria Molina of Arlington.
Christopher D. Goodrich, son of Suzanne G. Hruby of Arlington, has been commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army after successfully completing the Army ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Corps) program and graduating with a bachelor’s degree from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. Goodrich was a Distinguished Military Graduate who will be branched to the infantry.
Alicia M. Lamczyk has graduated from the Army ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Corps) National Advanced Leadership Camp at Fort Lewis in Tacoma, Wash. She is the daughter of Michael F. Lamczyk of Arlington.
